SORBA Tri-Cities Welcomes Abraham McIntyre as First Executive Director

In a landmark moment for the Tri-Cities mountain biking and outdoor community, SORBA Tri-Cities is excited to announce the appointment of Abraham McIntyre as its first-ever Executive Director. After 26 years of being a volunteer-driven organization, SORBA is embarking on an exciting new era, guided by strategic planning from its board and local stakeholders. As the demand for trails and outdoor recreation experiences continues to grow, this new leadership position will help expand the region's trail network, fostering community connections and supporting economic growth.

As a seasoned and passionate advocate for mountain biking and outdoor recreation, Abraham's roots in the Tri-Cities run deep. His love for mountain biking began at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) in 2001, where he raced for the club team, served as president, and helped shape the university’s nationally ranked cycling program and campus trails. After a decade of international disaster relief work, he returned to East Tennessee and immediately began making an impact. Abraham has been instrumental in numerous local projects, including the development of Johnson City’s Taco Trek, the Tannery Knobs Bike Park, and the upcoming Rotary Bicycle Playground and Skills Park at Lower Tannery Knobs.

Abraham’s professional background includes over 20 years of experience connecting people and resources, ranging from disaster response in the Caribbean to his recent role at the United Way of East Tennessee Highlands. His dedication to serving the community and his love for the outdoors make him uniquely qualified to lead SORBA Tri-Cities as it works to create a premier outdoor recreation destination.

“Trails are much more than dirt paths through the woods,” says McIntyre. “They are connectors—connecting people, communities, and our region’s potential. Whether you’re a seasoned rider, a family on a weekend outing, or someone looking for an alternative to screen time, trails are for everyone. I’m excited to help bring more opportunities to connect people with the outdoors and improve the health and well-being of our community.”

With McIntyre leading the way, SORBA Tri-Cities is poised to accelerate the development of beginner-friendly and advanced trails alike, ensuring the region’s trail network supports both recreation and economic growth. The organization aims to create experiences that improve quality of life, enhance tourism, and contribute to the region’s overall health.

Looking ahead, SORBA Tri-Cities is calling on local healthcare providers, businesses, and government leaders to collaborate and invest in the region’s future through trail development. “The benefits of trails are undeniable,” McIntyre says. “Together, we can make our region healthier, happier, and more connected.”

As SORBA Tri-Cities continues to grow, the organization encourages riders, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts alike to get involved and help build something amazing.
